Pre-testing of the SAFEWAY2SCHOOL system: This picture is from Scandiano in Italy, one of the five pilot sites in Europe where this system is tested.

The aim of this project that is funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Research Program – is to make the school roads in Europe safer for children, from home to school and back.

The outcome of the European research safety project SAFEWAY2SCHOOL will be presented in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, June 13, 2012.

The SAFEWAY2SCHOOL system includes: New signage on school buses and at bus stops. Driver support systems that aim to give school bus drivers information about school children, timetables, planned routes, speed limits etc. Map of Sweden Smartphones equipped with a application specifically created for this project will improve communication among users: children, parents, bus drivers and schools. Tags that can be pinned on the children's school bags will communicate wireless with bus stops and indicate the presence of a child to passing traffic.
